NDR – Talk Show: Mit Bettina Tietjen und Hubertus Meyer - Burckhardt

NDR Studio 1 August 2025
Overview

At the age of 14, he was already presenting his works in a gallery, and at 19, artist Heiner Meyer had his first solo exhibition. In the 1970s, he worked in the studio of artist Salvador Dalí in the Spanish fishing village of Cadaqués. His encounter with the eccentric surrealist had a lasting impact on him, both artistically and personally. At first glance at Meyer's drawings, Dalí said, “Don't try to paint a picture of the century, practice drawing first.” Dalí then broke a loaf of white bread and instructed Meyer to draw it. “He tormented me with the white bread for a month and a half; by then it had turned to stone. Then he was satisfied.” Meyer then studied at the University of Fine Arts in Braunschweig. His artistic style is pop art. In his works, the Bielefeld native references pop culture phenomena such as fashion labels, Greek classical sculptures, icons of the motor world, comics, Hollywood stars, and divas. To date, his works have been shown in over 390 international solo and group exhibitions and are held in public and private collections such as the Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona, the Contemporary Art Museum, Miami, and the Tommy Hilfiger Collection, Miami.
