Schöner als Echt: Kunsthalle Messmer

4 March - 25 June 2023

This exhibition is a unique retrospective dedicated to the internationally successful German pop art artist. To mark Heiner Meyer's 70th birthday, we are presenting unique pictures from his early work through to his most recent pieces – fresh from the studio! With his multifaceted approach and clear, realistic painting style, the artist transports his audience to another world. A world that may seem “more beautiful than real” to us.

Comics, cars, luxury items, advertising slogans, and consumer goods characterize the tradition of Pop Art and thus also form a focal point in Meyer's pictorial motifs.

His work thus also revolves around themes such as power, greed, prestige, and pleasure, as well as manipulation, beauty, and delusion. In doing so, he creates a mirror image of a society that is beginning to sense the limits of capitalism's promises of happiness.

In typical Pop Art fashion, he skillfully stages the conflict between reality and deception and creates works with ambiguous interpretations:

We cordially invite you to explore what lies hidden in typical Pop Art style, between the rhetoric of exaggeration and a dose of irony. Is it an innocent glorification of consumerism or a dash of social criticism disguised in a candy-colored fantasy world? Come by and find out for yourself.
