Shoes are among the items of clothing that have always held a special place in people's hearts. Not only do they protect against cold and heat, injury and dirt, shoes are also a projection surface for social status or erotic fantasies. The publication, which accompanies the exhibition of the same name at the LUDWIGGALERIE Schloss Oberhausen, shows the rich palette of often unusual representations of shoes in art – from antiquity to contemporary works, from the Middle Ages to Allen Jones. The absence of shoes, the imprint of shoes, and the symbolic meaning of shoes are also presented in artistic expressions. A separate chapter is devoted to the red shoe. As a “book within a book,” special attention is paid to the artistic work of Heiner Meyer, who repeatedly “portrays” shoes in his paintings, primarily in the form of provocative high heels.
